Ed Balls comments on leaks that School Support Staff Negotiating Body is to be scrapped

Responding to the leaked news that the School Support Staff Negotiating Body is to be scrapped, Shadow Secretary of State for Education Ed Balls said:

“When times are tough the government, local authorities, school leaders and the unions need to work together to ensure value for money. But instead of working with staff Michael Gove appears to be spoiling for a fight.

“Labour established the school support staff negotiating body because schools, staff and their represenatives told us it was vital to get a fair and transparent system in place so that these often lower paid workers could have a body which set fair pay and conditions standards.

“Pay and conditions for the hundreds of thousands of school support staff who play a vital role in education have varied widely. That has lead to real inefficiencies and weaknesses – pupils deserve better.

“To be planning to scrap that body whilst ministers and officials have refused for months to discuss its future with Unite, Unison or GMB or staff as a whole shows the high handed and reckless approach this government has taken to school staff.”
