The LGI’s Specialist Children’s Heart Surgery Unit

Last Friday I visited Leeds General Infirmary’s Children’s Heart Unit along with a local family whose little boy’s life was saved by doctors, nurses and surgeons at the Leeds Unit. I visited the hospital to hear concerns over the proposed closure of the heart unit and sign to the ‘Save our Surgery’ petition.

The Leeds specialist section is currently under threat of closure which could see these vital services moved to Newcastle or Liverpool. This could mean that critically ill children across our area will have to travel much further for saving treatment.

I met many of the brilliant and dedicated hard working staff all of whom have fears over what the closure might mean. Some of the surgeons told me that the closure could even lead to worse outcomes for patients.

In recent years LGI has invested to centralise all children’s services on one site, an improvement not offered in other hospitals. I have pledged my support by signing the petition. I have also written to the Health Secretary Andrew Lansley and Sir Neil Mckay who is in charge of the review to take into consideration the concerns about the possible closure of the heart unit.

I believe that the services offered by our NHS must continue to be shaped by the needs of patients and I will be fighting for this unit to remain open.
