The news this week for rail passengers in our area is nothing but bad. Not only are our trains already among the most overcrowded in Leeds, we’re now being told there is little chance of improvement in the next four years, and fares will rise regardless.

There seems little chance of improvement in the near future either, as the government announced this week that plans to order 1300 new carriages by 2014 have been halved, and no new carriages will run in Yorkshire.

The news that just 650 new carriages would be available nationally to ease overcrowding by 2014 comes just days after it was announced that fares would rise by an average of 6.2% next year.

On Friday I joined Morley’s two Labour Council candidates and local rail campaigners at Morley rail station to condemn the government’s plans to allocate just 100 second hand carriages to major cities in the north, despite plans to introduce brand new carriages in the South East and London.

All this bad news came in the same week as Yorkshire’s Passenger Transport Authority (Metro) released figures that show that some trains to and from Morley in the rush hour dangerously carry 50% more passengers than their full capacity.

The two worst affected trains are the 8.20am Morley to Leeds service which runs at an average of 154% capacity and the 6.13pm Leeds to Morley train operates at an average 146% capacity making them the second busiest services, every day, in each peak time.

The government’s plans are simply unfair to people here in Morley where rail services are bursting at the seams. Morley, Yorkshire and the North of England are once again being left behind by the Tories, despite the desperate state of some of our current services.

I’m urging you to get involved and help me send a message to the government to make rail services here are a priority.
