Welcoming Leeds Spiders Wheelchair Basketball team to Morley

Last week I joined one of our top Yorkshire teams, the Leeds Spiders wheelchair basketball team at a training session to welcome them to their new home in Morley. It’s fantastic that they have chosen to base themselves here and this shows what a great facility we have in our new leisure centre.

It was great to meet the players, who have varying levels of disabilities, ahead of their home game against Liverpool Greenbank at the new leisure centre on Queensway.

Members of the team, who are currently top of the sport’s second division, travel from across the north of England to take part in weekly training sessions and matches in Morley.

The team also work in schools across Yorkshire raising awareness of disability sport in the local community with taster sessions and coaching in schools.

I was massively impressed by the level of skill shown by these guys, who don’t let their disability hold them back in any way. They are really committed to the team, and I hope sports fans in our area will get behind the Spiders and support their bid to make it into division one next season.
