On the phones with NHS Direct

Last year over five and a half thousand patients across Wakefield who rung NHS Direct would otherwise have made an unnecessary trip to accident and emergency. I went along to the Wakefield NHS Direct call centre, where 250 staff answer calls from all over Yorkshire, to meet the staff, and listen to some of the calls with Christine, a trained nurse.

I’ve used the NHS Direct service myself and I know how important it is to parents and carers. It’s good to know there is a trained nurse on the other end of the phone, who can give instant advice and reassurance, and perhaps save you a trip to the hospital.

You can contact NHS Direct on 0845 4647, or through their website.
