Leeds and Wakefield Pride

Today is the 5th Leeds Pride and the first year LGBT Labour have marched at the event. I send my best wishes to everyone attending today, and next weekend’s Wakefield Pride.

2010 marks LGBT Labour’s 35th anniversary and the Labour Party has a proud record of transforming the legal rights for LGBT people, from an equal age of consent to civil partnerships and the right to adopt children, from scrapping the homophobic Section 28 to banning discrimination in the workplace and in the provision of goods and services.

The Conservative/Lib Dem coalition government needs watching carefully to ensure that LGBT rights are protected and improved. I support full marriage equality, and as School Secretary worked with schools, anti-bullying organisations and teaching unions to stamp out homophobic bullying, and I hope this work continues. Now more than ever it is important that the voices of the LGBT community are heard through prides and truly progressive political organisations like LGBT Labour.
