Business Lunch in Leeds with Rt Hon Liam Byrne MP

Leeds, Wakefield, and the surrounding towns have built up a thriving business community over recent decades – bringing jobs and investment to our area.

I was pleased to invite some of our leading local employers to a business lunch today to talk about how we keep our local economy growing, and crucially, how our area can come out of this recession stronger than ever before.

Liam Byrne MP, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, came along as our guest speaker. He gave a passionate speech about the need to stay firmly on our current route to recovery, and about how our investment in support over the last year has given us lower unemployment rates than other European countries.

He also talked about the challenges ahead – and the need to work with the international community to keep our businesses and our economy competitive.

So thank you to Liam, and to all the local businesses people that came along and made the discussion so interesting and positive. By making the most of our skilled and loyal local workforce, companies in our area can continue to go from strength to strength.

The Government has listened to the business community, and has taken a range of steps to help companies of all sizes through this tricky time – including ensuring some can defer tax payments for this year.

So if you’re a local business looking for a bit of extra support, feel free to contact my office or go to the Business Link website to see if you are eligible for any of the schemes.
