New Home Shopping Centre brings more jobs to Morley

Morley is a great place for companies to invest. We’ve got fantastic transport links, a strong business community, and a long tradition of hard work.

So it was no surprise when Asda announced they had chosen Morley as the site for their new Home Shopping Centre.

It’s good news for the area – bringing over 200 new jobs for local people. I went along to the official opening yesterday, to meet the staff and hear about how the Centre works.

It’s an innovative system for home shopping. Rather than sorting out your internet shopping orders in the main store, Asda staff can now pick the items more efficiently at the specially designed 50,000 sq ft centre.

That means they can complete twice as many orders every hour, and give customers much more flexibility about what time they want their shopping delivered to them.

I was taken on a tour by Doug Gurr, Asda’s Executive Development Director and Clive West, Asda’s Operations Director for home shopping, and got to meet some staff in a training session. The centre looks very impressive, and I wish all the staff the best in their new jobs.

Asda is one of our top regional employers. Their decision to expand their base here is further evidence that Morley is well-placed to come out of the downturn stronger than before.
