Morley High’s recipe for success

Every parent knows that children and teenagers will only eat healthy food if they get a chance to choose what’s on the menu – and the same is true for school dinners too.

I went along to Morley High on Friday to find out their special recipe for getting pupils eating healthily at school.

They are doing all right things: like consulting pupils about school food and serving it up on proper plates.

It’s clear that the catering team’s hard work has paid off, as take-up of school lunches is impressively high.

When I met with members of the Year 7 school council, the young people had some really innovative ideas for making sure school meals are tasty and healthy – including new salad ideas and serving free fruit for desert.

They also challenged me to help them cook a lunch of their choice in the school kitchens – which will be quite a challenge as we will need to cook hundreds of portions.

Year 7 will be voting on what meal we’ll be making in the next week or so. I’m looking forward to getting back to the school, rolling up my sleeves and getting involved.
