Keep Morley Police Station open on Saturday

With Morley Cllr Neil Dawson calling to keep our help desk open on Saturdays

In recent weeks and months I’ve been asking local people what they think about local policing. Hundreds of people have already sent me their views. Because despite assurances from the Prime Minister that front line policing would be protected, our front line policing  is under threat.

I’ve always said that massive cuts in budgets being forced on the police couldn’t be introduced without hitting the front line. And now, here in Morley, our police station help desk here in Morley may have its opening hours cut to save money.

West Yorkshire Police are in an impossible position. They’ve been asked to cut too far and too fast. How can they manage that without hitting front line policing? And they recently published cost saving proposals which would reduce the help desk opening times at Morley police station.

Of course the police have to save money but the front line is now under fire. And local people are clear in their view. They agree with me that our police station should be protected. 82% of the hundreds of people who’ve already responded to my police survey say the police station help desk should be kept open.

I’ve joined forces with Cllr Neil Dawson in opposing these proposals for Morley Police Station. Cllr Dawson has called on Morley Town Council to step in and, if necessary, fund Saturday opening themselves so we protect this vital resource for the local community. I’ll be taking the views of local people direct to the Home Secretary and to regional police chiefs to ask them to think again.

The message I’m getting from local people is loud and clear. They want to protect our local community policing. There’s still time to have your say too. Email me at ed@edballs.com if you want to tell me your views on changes going on with local policing.
