Watch my video backing Leeds Children’s Heart Unit

Today I joined thousands of other local campaigners to voice the strength of feeling across Yorkshire against the proposed closure of the Leeds Children’s Heart Unit. We gathered at the steps of Leeds Civic Hall to hear from speakers from the campaign and also from across the political divide about how important the unit is to our region and why it shouldn’t be closed. We then marched through the streets of Leeds with buses beeping and onlookers showing their  support to the campaign to keep the unit open and in Leeds.

We’ll be keeping up the pressure too. I’ve written again to the Health Secretary to ask that he intervene to stop the  closure of the great Leeds Children’s Heart Unit. While we understand the need to have centres of excellence in specialist areas such as children’s heart surgery, it simply doesn’t make sense to make families from right across Yorkshire travel long distances to Newcastle with sick children when we have a centre of excellence right here in Leeds.

The Government should call in this decision and look at it again.
