New CECA regional office choses their home in Morley

The Civil Engineering Contractors Association now has its regional office in Morley. I was there on Friday to open their new office officially and to hear about the work they and their members do in our region.

It’s great to see such an influential and important organisation taking the decision to base themselves here in Morley.

CECA represents the companies that build, maintain and upgrade the country’s infrastructure. The Yorkshire and Humberside member companies turnover over £13billion a year and employ 69,000 in our region. Infrastructure projects such as public transport or road investment and improvements to water and sewage systems are key to driving growth and jobs.

As CECA themselves say in their new ‘routemap for regional growth’ in our region, “Good infrastructure is essential for the region to prosper and there is an urgent need to invest in infrastructure in Yorkshire and Humberside.” They told me last week that for every pound spend on construction, our economy benefits by £2.84 or more if the money is invested in infrastructure.

That’s why it’s been so disappointing that there’s been so little investment in our region over the last couple of years. The regional development agency, Yorkshire Forward was a real driving force for growth and jobs. But it was scrapped by the Coalition Government and replaced by a Local Enterprise Partnership which has a broad remit of responsibility but none of the resources. That means the impact LEPs have been able to have has been much more limited.

With no growth in our economy for over two years we desperately need a change of direction. For a long time now, I’ve been calling on the Government to bring forwards infrastructure projects to kick-start economic growth.

Locally we now have a great asset with the CECA based locally. But their members need projects to work on so that they can take on new staff and invest in resources for our region. I will be meeting with the regional team regularly here in Morley to make sure we work closely together to get a good deal for the local and regional economy.

Regional Director of CECA Yorkshire & Humberside is Mark Roper. The new office address is 26 Howley Park Business Village, Morley LS27 0BZ
