International Women’s Day by Clare Calder, my constituency intern

Out campaigning with Ed

By Clare Calder my constituency intern:
Today is International Women’s Day and there couldn’t be a more important time for women to get involved in politics. The public service jobs which have traditionally been performed by women are under threat, with many being forced into low paid work and the services upon which we rely being cut.

That’s why I’m studying politics at Leeds University and why I’m so pleased and proud to be working one day a week for Ed Balls. The skills and experience I’ve gained since I started working in the constituency office last September have been invaluable to me. It has given me greater confidence in my own capabilities and I have thoroughly enjoyed working in a constituency as interesting and diverse as Morley and Outwood.

I’ve enjoyed the variety of tasks I’ve taken on, including working on policy, assisting with casework, media monitoring and facilitating discussion groups at the monthly coffee sessions which Ed holds around the constituency. I also go out campaigning with Ed whenever I can at the weekends.

Ed is always very encouraging and has a real commitment to women’s equality.

Happy International Women’s Day.
