Back our campaign for more 20mph zones for Morley

Morley Councillor, Neil Dawson and I have launched a petition to enable residents to show their support for more 20mph zones in Morley, in particular around schools and in residential areas.

Parents regularly raise concerns with me about the number of cars on our roads and the speed they travel. It means children are kept indoors rather than playing outside and often get driven to school rather than walking.

A few years back, when I was Secretary of State for Children, I launched an action plan that included a recommendation for more local authorities to set up 20 mph zones to enable more children to play outside and walk or bike to school.

The overall aim of 20mph zones is to reduce the overall speed of vehicles, which is shown to lower accident levels and in turn increase the rate of survival of pedestrians involved in an accident, particularly those involving young pedestrians.

With our petition, Cllr Dawson and I will be asking Leeds City Council to consider introducing 20mph zones outside all schools in this area as well as in residential areas.

You can give your support to the petition by emailing me ed@edballs.com . Please paste this subject into your email: I back more 20mph speeds limit for Morley and make sure you include your address and postcode.
