New review into children’s heart surgeries

After two years of dither and delay it’s very good news that the flawed proposals to close Leeds Children’s Heart Surgery have finally been rejected.

Families from our area caring for sick children shouldn’t have to face long and tiring journeys to Newcastle or Liverpool on top of everything else.

This victory would never have happened without the dedication of the “Save our Surgery” team and the thousands of parents, staff, Councillors, MPs and others who supported the campaign.

But this is not the end of the story – and I welcome the announcement of a new review into the provision of children’s heart surgeries. This must be open and accountable and give proper consideration to the concerns of the local people who have backed the Leeds Unit in their thousands.

Most importantly, the Government must ensure any future changes deliver the best possible treatment for children and families in Yorkshire.
