Enabled Works – now officially open!

It was a great honour to officially open the Enabled Works factory in Morley on Friday. A year ago, when the Remploy factories in South Leeds and Pontefract closed, 12 former employees decided to invest £5,000 of their own redundancy payment to create a new workers co-operative – Enabled Works.

The not-for-profit society was set up with support from the Co-operative Enterprise Hub and soon started picking up contracts from businesses and local authorities.

Tony, Tina, John, Steven and the team have done an amazing job to get things going and everyone is working really hard to make sure it is a success.

When I first visited a few months back the factory was just getting started but in just a few months, they’ve achieved amazing things and their efforts were recently acknowledged as they won Start up of the Year in Social Enterprise Yorkshire & the Humber’s annual awards.

As a Labour and Cooperative MP, I’m delighted to have a new award winning Cooperative factory, owned and run by the workers themselves, open in my constituency. And I’ll continue to work with the team to make sure the local and Enabled Works Cooperative gets the support they need to be a real success.
