My column in the Morley Observer & Advertiser

Despite having passed the pink doors of Hairoom on Troy Road hundreds of times, it’s fair to say I was surprised to be greeted by dozens of smiling mannequin heads when I stepped inside.

Andrea’s Hairoom helps people suffering from a range of illnesses involving hair loss.  It’s incredible how changing a person’s hair can have such a big impact – but as Andrea’s customers told me, it’s such a visible thing and so important for them to feel normal again.

One women recalled how her old wig had never fitted properly (she lost it on a man’s umbrella once) and had always been uncomfortable to wear but that thanks to Andrea she was now more confident and able to lead a more active life. Another woman explained how Andrea’s advice had helped her gain the confidence to begin dating again.

Andrea is NHS approved and as the local NHS commissioners told us, patients qualify for help according to their health needs.  For many Hairoom customers it’s really important to be able to access NHS support based on their needs, not simply on their ability to pay.

Andrea started out as an apprentice hair specialist, and was inspired by her niece who lost her hair when she was just four years old.  She was then encouraged to set up her own small business and supported by her bank.

Small businesses are the lifeblood of our economy. HSBC have supported Andrea and her business and it is vital our banks do more to support small businesses and our local economy here in Morley. Hairoom is a great local firm – anyone who wants to find out more should get in touch with them at
