Budget 2014 and Starlight Express at Woodkirk Academy: My Column in Morley Observer

Budget Day is a big set piece event in the House of Commons and MPs crowd into the Chamber to hear the Government’s big announcements. Regular readers of the Morley Observer will know that I’ve been very concerned about the impact of the cost of living crisis, as well as the growing number of young people who are not in education, training or employment when they leave school. My post bag is filled with cases of families who want to get on but who are struggling.

I wanted to see action to help them. Too many families in Morley are working hard but, as a result of rising bills and childcare costs, simply can’t make ends meet. I’ve also been calling for a Compulsory Jobs Guarantee that would get our young and long-term unemployed back to work.

Unfortunately the Budget last Wednesday totally failed to deliver – for families or for young people. What a wasted opportunity.

What an amazing wealth of talent at Woodkirk Academy! Control, Rusty, Pearl, Greaseball and the rest of the Starlight Express cast sped around the Academy’s theatre on roller skates in stunning costumes and make up. And while sitting in audience we were left breathless just watching, the cast still managed to deliver amazing singing and acting performances too. The whole evening was a great success.

Huge congratulations to all the staff and students who made the production happen. Thanks too to Headteacher Jonathan White and Governors for inviting me along to enjoy such a spectacular performance. It was a real treat.
